New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham Announces Funding for Doña Ana County Abortion Clinic

Access to Abortion Care Expanding in Southern New Mexico

Funding to Support Essential Reproductive Health Services

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has announced $1 million in funding to support the establishment of an abortion clinic in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The funding will be used to renovate and equip a clinic in Las Cruces, which will provide abortion care, contraception, and other reproductive health services.

The new clinic will be the first in Doña Ana County, which is home to over 200,000 people. The nearest abortion clinic is currently located in Albuquerque, over 200 miles away. The funding will allow the clinic to provide much-needed abortion care to people in the region.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, over half of all women in the United States live in a county without an abortion provider. This can make it difficult for people to access abortion care, especially for those who are low-income or who live in rural areas.

The funding for the Doña Ana County clinic is part of Governor Lujan Grisham's commitment to expanding access to abortion care in New Mexico. In 2019, she signed into law the Reproductive Health Act, which codifies the right to abortion in state law and removes criminal penalties for abortion providers.

The funding for the Doña Ana County clinic has been praised by abortion rights advocates. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico called the funding "a historic investment in reproductive health care" and said it would "make a real difference in the lives of people in Doña Ana County."
